Debra Bouricius is a late‑in‑life watercolor artist whose work is rooted in a lifelong love of wildlife and native plants. Her paintings often feature hummingbirds, a subject she knows intimately after 27 years of banding and welcoming more than 16,000 birds each season to her home in Peaceful Valley, Colorado.  This painting was inspired by her 12 years of banding hummingbirds in Sedona, Arizona, and reflects her rare closeness to these birds, capturing the spirit, motion, and brilliance of the hummingbirds she knows so well.

The piece features a Calliope Hummingbird hiding in Ocotillo, Costa's Hummingbird feeding on Ocotillo, Rivoli’s Hummingbird sitting on Prickly Pear, Black-chinned Hummingbird hiding in Chuparosa, Anna's Hummingbird feeding on Parry’s Penstemon, and Rufous Hummingbird and Broad-Tailed Hummingbird having a kerfuffle.
